I wonder if they were in dry hard clay and ploughing the tile deep. A 2nd tractor may have been hooked onto the handy front weight rack. Instead of crawling under to connect the drawbar.
All they had to do was start turning to follow the terrain and with the side pull from the front ..............snap.
Or a nasty casting flaw. I doubt any scraplead got into the iron used to cast the piece but you never know. Deere is pretty fussy on metalurgy checks.
