It would be interesting to know what really happened. The people involved are not going to admit to horsing around. I wonder if they were in dry hard clay and ploughing the tile deep. A 2nd tractor may have been hooked onto the handy front weight rack. Instead of crawling under to connect the drawbar. All they had to do was start turning to follow the terrain and with the side pull from the front ..... ..... ..snap. Or a nasty casting flaw. I doubt any scraplead got into the iron used to cast the piece but you never know. Deere is pretty fussy on metalurgy checks.

Hard to believe this didn't start a urine trajectory contest with the guy from Louisville. Figured he'd come in ranting and raving in big capital letters, foaming at the mouth about someone running the picture through Photoshop.

I wonder if something could have failed in the tranny that put a real stress on the case causing it to break. Maybe a shaft or gear broke and bound it up and all that power just split the case.

Hi Leland,

I had one get away from me yesterday and like a 3-year-old dummy, I pushed the clutch and dropped her back down three feet on her nose, kabang!

Now, I'm setting here thinking, "There, but for the grace of God, go I".

I just gotta get out of these darned hills or get some front end weights mounted up. :>(

Would kinda like to know all of that story on the John; those are a pretty tough ol' rig.

Out east here we don't have to worry about hills, just going to deep here with a light front end. And those suit case weights for those old red beasts are getting hard to find anymore, But I also am curious and the demize of old john also .

My books say DO NOT ADD FRONT END WEIGHT to a front axle drive tractor.

'Spose that had anything to do with it?

Dunno,

Allan

What book is that? You need to have weight on the font to make the front wheel drive more effective.

Hi J,

It is in the operator's manual of my tractor. Granted, it was published back in '76 before these things were so popular.

Trac 4 supplies the parts for the Elwood/Spicer front ends. They were factory supplied to IH for a lot of years, til JI Case bought IH out. Elwood Manufacturing went out of business in 1989. We picked up the parts.

Ya know I don't quite understand how these tractors break while being used like they are supposed to be used. We got a local field days here that has a pull, locals bring their toys and battle it out in the 30,000lb free for all with seriously modified engines and they don't break them in half, and thats with way more weights than the tractor is ever supposed to have and duels, sometimes both front and rear. That was a very nice looking tractor, prolly worth around $55,000, I should think you could fix it for that.

That reminds me of a mess I saw back in the '80's.
My neighbour had about 12 tons of manure on a spreader behind his new 85 hp International as he made his way down the highway to a field across the road. Somehow he managed to do a left turn into the path of a Volvo 240 as the lady tried to pass him.

The impact on the back of the left front wheel snapped the block of the International, which then allowed the engine and front wheels to drop to the pavement. The cab, Bob, and the spreader kept going at the tractor's road speed until the laws of physics had taken their course.

Another neighbour did the estimate for damage to the Volvo. Grille, bumper, no radiator. $900. The tractor? $20,000.
