Your one book is wrong. Positive ground is always positive coil post to distrubutor, negative ground is always the negative post to the dist. If wired backwards you get a weak spark because the plugs are trying to fire backwards (to center post instead of from it, chassis of vehichle is absorbing some spark and you will have low power mainly showing itself at low RPM's.
