According to the book Auto Engines and Electrical Systems used in tech school where I took auto electric ;Neg ground neg coil terminal to distributor ,pos ground pos coil terminal to distributor.Then to check hold a pencil tip between plug wire end and top of spark plug to ensure coil polarity.Also a test to bypass a faulty switch is to do what old said.With switch on test light will light between dist terminal on the coil and grounded coil housing[that checks for open windings in the coil]
