Friend of mine had the same problem- took it up with the Extension Service- after extensive research and field trials (at considerable expense to the State, of course), discovered that he was planting them upside down. He was grabbing them by the tiny little feet, and putting them into the row that way, because it was easier. He eventually purchased an inverter for his chicken planter, and things have gone better since.
