We generally use 'bout 150 feet, or whatever looks right, not real critical. Lay a rope down for the starting line and one "over there" for the finish.
Numbers of tractors per race depends on the track width and safety, from two to ?.
Only rules are, must be in gear with clutch fully engaged, no use of brakes, and can't stall out. Keep it only for fun and it will be. We never had classes or whatever, just kept full grown and garden seperate. Had a Ditch-Witch once, gave him a ribbon and held half a dozen other races while he finished one.
By the way, you just might want to pack a lunch for some of the "speedy" ones. :-)
