we are thinking about doing a slow race at this years tractor show. am looking for some specifics on how to set it up. How long of a track, how many to run at one time, how to match up the tractors, IH-vs-JD or JD -vs-JD etc. Anyone have any info on this?

Run two or so at a time, track length really doesn"t need to be much more than 50ft. Try to mate them up for close finishes if you can guess the speeds beforehand. We class them by drivers, using adult and junior as the two categories. Need a seperate stopwatch and timer guy for each lane.

Dad and I have "lots " of trophies from lots of shows that have had slow races.

THere are a lot of differnt rules --- some are important because for some stupid reason even though its for fun someone always wants to cheet to win.

even if the only thing they win is a stupid plaque

one guy went so far as to try and beet us he had a transmition MADE! and we used 3 differnt tractors in that 3 yr periond so no one would think we were trying to hog the trophies.

ask me about the rules I have seen if you want.

Charlie,

Was that your gold D at the Flywheelers' show a week and a half ago? Great tractor and wonderful history on it. If it wasn't yours, it still is a great machine.

We generally use 'bout 150 feet, or whatever looks right, not real critical. Lay a rope down for the starting line and one "over there" for the finish. Numbers of tractors per race depends on the track width and safety, from two to ?. Only rules are, must be in gear with clutch fully engaged, no use of brakes, and can't stall out. Keep it only for fun and it will be. We never had classes or whatever, just kept full grown and garden seperate. Had a Ditch-Witch once, gave him a ribbon and held half a dozen other races while he finished one.
By the way, you just might want to pack a lunch for some of the "speedy" ones. :-)

Chris:
Make sure that you run the single range speeds and the double range speeds separately.EX: John Deere B and Cockshutt 40 in one class and Farmall H and Case D in another. At our fair we dig a deep even trench for them to go through and up --- most stall out on it. Lots-a-fun!!
