IH 656 Battery Overheating Problem ?

I had an older battery in this tractor and have been recharging it over the past couple years. Yesterday it was completly dead and I noticed when I attempted to recharge it pop a cap and the battery was boiling. I bought a new one and tractor started fine. I used it about 20 minutes and then I could spell sulfur or acid. This new battery was very hot and boiling also. Any ideas on the problem - electical overload somewhere ?
