I had an older battery in this tractor and have been recharging it over the past couple years. Yesterday it was completly dead and I noticed when I attempted to recharge it pop a cap and the battery was boiling. I bought a new one and tractor started fine. I used it about 20 minutes and then I could spell sulfur or acid. This new battery was very hot and boiling also. Any ideas on the problem - electical overload somewhere ?

jhanson: No question your system is over charging. Check as bo told you.

measure the charging voltage at the battery terminals with the tractor running. Use a multimeter and you should read 13-14.5 volts...any more than that and the voltage regulator gave up the ghost.

And shut her down as soon as you get that voltage reading. Batteries in this situation have been known to go BOOOOOM!

Check the ground connections in and around the generator/alternator and regulator.

The last time I had this problem it was caused by a loose ground on the internal regulator of an alternator.

This causes the unit to sense low voltage and continue to charge even though the battery is fully charged.

Good luck.
