dump truck hydraulic lift problem

My '86 GMC dump truck bed will not stay in the up position while dumping. It lifts fine, but drifts down unless you keep stick back. I had to fabricate a vented reservoir filler plug with a black iron fitting and a small piece of soft plastic line(from soft plug hearing protection) because NOBODY sells the right part. That small piece of plastic line(approximately 1/16" thick by 1" long) eventually fell in the reservoir. I think this ultimately caused the problem, but where do you look and how do you fix? Thanks fo any help.
