To go along with what Paul said, two 6v battery's in parallel will yeild more amp/hrs than one single 12v battery.

If the starter demand current exceeds what a 12v baatery can supply, then two 6v batterys in series will give the correct amperage draw needed.

Yes a smaller battery may work for a short time but it will quickly fail.

Example: If a starter requires 150amps, then using a single battery rated for 105amp/hr will not last very long as the lead plates will get hot and warp thus shorting out from touching one another.

Install two battery's rated at 105amp/hr then total available is 210amp/hr and be with in the 150amp/hr starter demand.

So then our choice becomes, two 6v battery's rated at 205amp/hr each, wired in series would yeild 12v @205amp/hr.

OR two 12v 105amp/hr battery's wired in parallel to yield 12v@210amp/hr.

OR a single 12v battery rated at 200amp/hr.
