battery layout on IH 606

I recently bought an IH 606 diesel and one of the few things it needs is a new set of batteries. It has 2 brackets for 6 volt batteries, and evidently is wired up to make 12 volts. The seller said he would drop in a single 12 volt battery, and to forget about the two 6 volt battery setup. If it is this simple, why did the factory have this layout? Am I overlooking something?

I have used just one 12V battery in my 460 Diesel for years. Keep your starter in good shape and the wiring.

The key is to get the same power (cranking amps & reserve) from the single 12v as you did from the 2 6v. I much prefer a single 12v, less cables to deal with, and generally when one 6v goes bad, it wrecks the other as well, you get more time between batt changes using just one.

But, not just any 12v will give you good preformance.

Hi Norgeman,

To go along with what Paul said, two 6v battery's in parallel will yeild more amp/hrs than one single 12v battery.

If the starter demand current exceeds what a 12v baatery can supply, then two 6v batterys in series will give the correct amperage draw needed.

Yes a smaller battery may work for a short time but it will quickly fail.

Example: If a starter requires 150amps, then using a single battery rated for 105amp/hr will not last very long as the lead plates will get hot and warp thus shorting out from touching one another.

Install two battery's rated at 105amp/hr then total available is 210amp/hr and be with in the 150amp/hr starter demand.

So then our choice becomes, two 6v battery's rated at 205amp/hr each, wired in series would yeild 12v @205amp/hr.

OR two 12v 105amp/hr battery's wired in parallel to yield 12v@210amp/hr.

OR a single 12v battery rated at 200amp/hr.

You've obviously never heard of the Exide/Optima. Very small, can be mounted in any position, even upside down, vibration proof, more CCA than ANY 2 6v batteries, and even comes in a combo starting/deep cycle (yellow top) model.

Where you been dude? Your info is 15 years old!

Batteries have come a long way since that 606 was built. A modern 12V battery has more power than those original 6 volt batteries combined, and have 2 less cable connections to give trouble. If it was mine,I would go with a single Optima or Exide Orbital sealed sprial cell 12V battery. They last a very long time( I have an Optima 15 years old that still cranks like new) and being sealed, do not corrode the battery box or terminals. They also have a very slow self discharge rate which is good for a tractor that sets a lot without being run. I was a bit shocked and amused to see a restored collection of Moline 6 cyl diesel tractors owned by the same guy. In the center of those huge battery boxes that originally held 3 parallel wired 12V batteries, was a single little Exide Orbital sealed battery that took up about 1/4 of the battery box. They easily fired up those 4-500 CI engines twice a day for the parades during the 4 day tractor show.
