Varying drop sizes are offered because tow vehicles come with varying bumper heights. It's tough to buy a trailer hitch without knowing what kind of trailer you are going to pull. The object is to make sure the trailer is level so you don't put too much tongue weight on your truck, or loss of control because you are pulling your trailer up hill.

If you are going to pull a rented trailer, find out what the hitch height is when the trailer is level, and select the drop length for your hitch. Some trailers have adjustable hitches to compensate for this as well.
