O/T: trailer hitch question

I have a 2x2 receiver hitch on the back of my GMC K2500.

I don't yet own a trailer, but want to buy a ball mount so that I can pull a rented car trailer, etc.

I've seen many different ball mounts with various amount of drop (2", 4", etc.) and also lengths (some are short and some extend quite a bit away from the bumper horizontally).

For a 4x4 truck, which drop would work for most applications?

What about length of the ball mount? When do you use the "long" mounts?

Lastly, what about ball size? Should I get a 1 7/8" or a 2" or both? What do most trailers use today?

Varying drop sizes are offered because tow vehicles come with varying bumper heights. It's tough to buy a trailer hitch without knowing what kind of trailer you are going to pull. The object is to make sure the trailer is level so you don't put too much tongue weight on your truck, or loss of control because you are pulling your trailer up hill.

If you are going to pull a rented trailer, find out what the hitch height is when the trailer is level, and select the drop length for your hitch. Some trailers have adjustable hitches to compensate for this as well.

The long mounts can catch you in both shins when you walk around back of your truck. LOL

Didn't realize they rented those things. I expected they'd charge me an arm and a leg to buy one.

if your just renting a car hauler why not just rent the ball set up for a couple bucks??? Then when you buy your trailer you can buy the right one for it at that time.

just a thought -- rick

Most trailers use 2" balls real small light weight ones still use 1 7/8s balls but if you are worring about drop they make a nice adjustable ball mount that you can raise or lower with a rachet I bought mine at walmart other places have them also this way I need only 1 ball mount not 2 or 3.

One of my trailers says that the top of the ball should be 19 inches from ground before trailer is hitched up. This seems to be a good number for all my trailers. I use both 2 inch and 2 5/16 in balls. 2 inch for stuff under 5500 total. I changes a 1 7/8 trailer to 2 in to eliminate on ball size.

I only have a small flat bed for hauling the lawn tractor and such, but I figured what drop to get by what ever it took for the trailer to be level when loaded. Jim.

Other's advice is good. Compare ratings. Do not buy a/any cheap import ball/balls. They have been known to break in the middle...not nice.

Michael,

Our F350 4x4 (SRW) has a 4" drop hitch for 2" ball and we have a heavy duty hitch for 2 5/16" balls that has a 6" drop. This one has a solid bar (not box tubing but solid stock) for the mounting part. With the 4" drop the top of the 2" ball sits about 21" off the ground and with that height some trailers I pull are a little too high in the front--also the tail end will tend to bottom out under certain conditions--like in steep hills or curbs, parking lots with drainage areas, etc. Buy the highest rating you can find for your hitch--look at tongue weight and gross towing weight ratings. (typical 2" hitch, 500#'s tongue weight, 5000#'s gross weight)

With a later 4x4 you will most likely want a 4 inch drop ball mount. Most trailers you will be pulling use a 2 5/16 inch ball, but it would be possible that you might also want a 2 inch, but not likely.

The vast majority of utility and boat trailers that I encounter have a 1 7/8" coupler. When I rent from U-Haul, their 2" coupler adjusts down to 1 7/8", as well. Though I carry a 2" ball mount, I almost always use the smaller ball for loads under 3000 pounds.

The most effective hitch height I have encountered for small trailers is 19 1/4" to the top of the ball. Get a mount that comes close to that, if your vehicle will accomodate it without hitting a spare tire or rear door.
