Alan, Awhile back, I had a JD 440 crawler with the two cylinder gas engine. I don't know what all the differences would be between mine and yours. When I got it, the left steering clutch would not release. This was caused by rain water getting in the opening at the top of the housing and freezing it up. I tried to loosen it up by adjusting and running it into heavy objects, but it would not pop loose. Finally, I undid the track at the master link, pulled the main sprocket and opened up the final drive case - exposing the steering clutch. Then, I simply separated the multiple clutches with a thin bladed putty knife, cleaned them up, and reinstalled and adjusted per the manual. It worked fine after that and I did not have to buy any of the expensive parts in there. It also gave me a chance to clean and adjust the band steering brake around the clutch housing. Best I remember, it was a simple straightforward job that took me about 1/2 day. Good luck. Jason
