My Dad had a 89,same thing except 5 speed.the switch shorted out,but he got the battery disconnected and the little "fire" out before any damage occured other than a wiring harness.Had to put one starter,a clutch,a radiator and a few sets of brakes all the way around,and thats about it.When Dad dies it had 200000 plus miles on it and he hardly ever changed the oil and such on it.Dont know why Dad never did things like that,and got away with it.When I changed the oil in his M shrlt beofre he died,it was probably the first time it had been changed in 15 years!man was it black!
