Depends whether the generator is AC or DC. AC (alternator)- buy and fit a new rectifier and then connect correctly (and possibly a new regulator). DC (dynamo) - the voltage reg will not work (and will weld contacts together eventually), unless the control box is re-set for other polarity. Yes, ammeter and/or voltmeter will read backwards. In addition generator will not run normally (no charge) unless field circuit is re-polarised by "flashing" the field. Machine may start and appear to run normally, but depends on ignition system, until battery exhausts. For instance, depends on whether it is petrol or diesel. Lots of possibilities to contend with, so need to consider each case on it"s merits. Regards, RAB
