They would pretty soon - if only to replace the torque plate. We found that was the main problem, changing down the box at max torque on the engine. You soon learned to change early, around 17-1800rpm, or risk losing the torque plate if you left it to 1500 before dropping down. Still probably just as reliable as some of the newer powershift trannies in use now provided they were kept in adjustment.
