electric motor question

my dad just got a used metal lathe with a three phase motor on it, it also has a reversing lever. my question is since we don,t have three phase at the shop can I put on a new 220 single phase motor on it and still have the reverse, or would I be better off with a phase converter? Also where and what type phase converter? Rick
