Canada shipping- the rest. . . of the story

I got a nice email back from my seller- he pointed out that our agreement provided for a certain amount for shipping and building the crate, but that the customs and border fees are a cost of the buyer. He noted that he has to pay them when he orders parts from the states for his Studebaker. He also considers it a ripoff.
He then gave a detailed accounting of his actual costs- in the 2 or 3 months interval between when we talked and when I finally got around to sending the check, shipping had increased a few dollars, but not enough to worry about, from his viewpoint. Of more impact was the weakening US dollar (geez- us country boys shouldn't have to get into the nuances of international finance just to buy/sell a tractor part). The exchange rate, plus the shipping increase, ate up all the shipping and handling money, with the result that he wound up making the packing crate for free.
Bottom line- He's a good guy, and I don't feel cheated. The quality of the part is top notch (he manufactures 3 point hitch parts for Cockshutts- there's a link on the Cockshutt home page- I recommend him to anyone). Its probably "my bad" for not knowing about customs and brokerage expenses, but I (and lots of others) know now. As grandma used to say, "Sometimes life sure gets tejious (sic)".
