Just a couple of things. The external antenna probably isn't the AM antenna. The AM antenna is normally internal on a ferrite rod. If you use the AM radio at night and still can't pick up anything, there's something wrong with the radio itself. If the radio works OK, you can increase the reception by buying or making a tuned, loop resonator and putting it on top of the radio. The resonator is just a length of wire looped around a 10 inch form with a variable capacitor in series. There are plans on the internet.
