You kind of answered your question when you stated "cheap radio". To a certain extent you do get what you pay for.

AM stations are typically limited in transmission power unless they have been granted "clear channel" licensing.

You would be taking a chance, but if you want to tinker with our radio and possibly improve the reception or cause harm instead----open the radio to where you can get to the internal workings.

You will note some small square box looking items that have holes with screws in the center of them.
The box looking things are about 3/8ths inches square and maybe a �" tall.

With the radio running on battery power, adjust the screws for better reception. Sometimes it works, sometimes you just screw up your radio.

Try it if you dare.
