A little C or V shaped piece of metal welded into the links so the ends of the c/v press into the ice. Also called V bar chains. Look at http://tirechain.com/DUO-GRIP-V-BAR.htm
If you use them on ag tires make sure the chains don"t slip in between the cleats or they will be useless. I"m sure which is better depends on type and dept of snow, but I"d venture to guess on ice turf tires would keep more chains in contact with the ice.
