Deer/rats are a part of the whole population up here on the NY/PA border. Road killed deer can be seen along 17/86 on any day in any season and also along the country roads and in the suburbs. Last spring, I hit a fawn in downtown Vestal in a residential and business area. The other day, I was entering the Hamlet of Richford and three deer jumped out of a field and ran down the main street ahead of me for a few hundred yards before hooking a left and taking off on a side street that led to the hills. Car-deer accidents are no strangers to my family. Too many does and the ones in my corner of the world all seem to drop twins who grow up and drop twins who grow up and drop twins, etc., etc., etc.
