I whacked a deer with my car, car is drivable but smashed. I still consider myself lucky, if I would have hit it head on I could have been killed. The front right side of my car is wasted. I hate deer.

I haven't got mine yet this year. I still have 2 months to find him!

Out here in the west, especially in Eastern Utah and all over Wyoming, you have to watch for antelope. Those critters are just plain suicidal. I used to work for an electrical power coop (G&T). We built a 400mw power plant out near the Colorado border. The water for the plant was pumped out of the Green river to a high point reservoir and then was gravity fed from there to the plant. During the graveyard shift, it was the job of one of the control room operators to get in a pickup truck and drive the 10 miles to the reservoir to take some guage readings. One night in the dead of winter (it gets way below zero out there) he came around a curve and his headlights showed an entire herd of antelope bedded down on the asphalt. I guess it retains some heat from the daytime sunshine. He was only going 45 mph (highway patrol investigation confirmed his speed). Guess how many antelope died that night? (scroll down)..... ..

TWENTY SEVEN DEAD!! Div of Wildlife Services and BLM both were on the scene and counted up the carcasses. Some didn't have a mark on them....just ran off and died of heart attacks, I guess. Damage to the truck wasn't that extensive: grille, headlights, hood. It was still driveable. If I hadn't seen the pictures and talked to the eyewitnesses, I wouldn't have believed it either.

Deer/rats are a part of the whole population up here on the NY/PA border. Road killed deer can be seen along 17/86 on any day in any season and also along the country roads and in the suburbs. Last spring, I hit a fawn in downtown Vestal in a residential and business area. The other day, I was entering the Hamlet of Richford and three deer jumped out of a field and ran down the main street ahead of me for a few hundred yards before hooking a left and taking off on a side street that led to the hills.

Car-deer accidents are no strangers to my family.

Too many does and the ones in my corner of the world all seem to drop twins who grow up and drop twins who grow up and drop twins, etc., etc., etc.

According to the numbers, white tail deere kill more Americans every year than all other wildlife caused deaths combined. Out deere hunting today and only venison seen was 1/4 mile away in a shotgun only area.

Thats the ways it goes I used to run a delivery route about 300 miles long at night.from cent ILL to Quincy IL just driving thru pike and adams countys I nailed 24 deer one fall during rut , got to know troopers on a first name basis. but the states need to issue more permits and have doe only seasons for a couple of years to thin them out

Glad to hear you are ok. My wife has hit (excuse me,she has had two hit her) but I have hit one on a motorcycle. Luckily i was able to ride home afterwards but I still don"t ride at night any more.

We are trying to figure out how to make the state pay and be responsible for accidents caused by deer since the state brought them in here in the first place. My dad and I figure that if the state conrols the hunting and population of them then that makesthen the states deer and thus responsible just as cattle owners are. haha so far that arguement has not worked that i know of but .. heheheeh

Even with the coyotes here in Tennessee they are still getting thicker and thicker. From my house to the highway is about 2 miles and it is rare that I don"t see at least one everytime I go out.

Yes those deer are troublesome. Our pea combining crew hit one a year and a half ago on our way out to the pea field. Our mechanic was driving and the big doe came leaping ot of the ditch and tried to jump the hood of the van but it was too late. It busted in the top of the windshield and hit the driver in the left side of the face making him a bloody mess. It screwed up his eye and to this day he still sees very little out of it. Pretty scary what those animals can do. Makes you think.

I called my insurance comp. this AM and I am covered for acts of God, including deer. I have to pay the $100 dect. + half of a rental car/day. It is amazing how many you see dead on the side of the road, you would think that they would catch on and look both ways or something. I have even seen dogs look into the street before crossing, doesnt help much but at least they dont sprint across a highway.

Try as I might, I can't seem to get wild animals to understand the concept of traffic flow. No matter how many times it is explained to them, they still keep running out in traffic.

Seriously, am glad you are ok. I have hit one myself. Nothing anyone can do, but keep watching the sides of the road. Sometimes, even that isn't enough.

This is almost embarrasing to admit, but my blushing bride of 33 years and I probably hold some kind of record. In one year, we got a total of TEN. All told we have probably gotten 18 -20 over the 24 years we have lived where we are.

Several years ago I bought a new (used) pickup. Next morning I was going to work and on a stretch of highway that is noted for deer crossing, there was a nice buck standing with his hind legs in the ditch and his front legs on the shoulder. This guy just watched me go by like saying "just checking on what you are driving now".

You'd think the self-preservation instinct would kick in when a car goes careening toward a deer. I sure would move if I saw the grill of an F-250 getting too close to me.

I was heading to the field with the Sterling and two deer were standing in the road up in Adams county. I could see them from a half mile off. Laid on the air horn, started slowing down, pumped the brakes, rolled down the windows and yelled "Hey, Stupid!". Nothing worked, they just watched me slow to a stop within ren feet of them. I almost had to get out and shoo them off the road!

Maybe it's a game for them. You know? Venison Roulette...

RF,

I've read that there are more deer just in the suburbs of the cities nowadays than there were in the whole country the day Columbus landed.

They are like people; populations have exploded.

Yes Allen and it is getting worse every day.

When I moved to my present location in 1980 we had a good system. About 3000 acres of woods owned by 3 people lined by dairy farms. The hunters; deer; and coyote were all happy to stay in the woods. The land was all leased to hunters which with the coyotes kept the population in check.
Then one day urban sprawl hit our area. One owner sold off 500 acres to build a 5 acre tract subdivision which cut off his other 500 acres from the area so he terminated the hunting lease. Another owner sold off his whole 1000 acres to a country club/golf course developer for future development; so that left only 1000 acres to hunt.

The city folks moving in complained about the coyotes so the state came in and removed them.

So you can see where we are now. The deer have no natural enemies and the hunters have been pushed out. They did try to hunt using dogs to chase the deer onto the leased land but that did not go over to well. Imaging that..... Its 6 am on a Sunday morning and here comes a deer followed by a pack of dogs right through your new subdivision yard and garden. Boy that did not go over well at all.

So now every one is complaining that the deer eat everything in site. Your flowers; veggie garden; everything. Best part is they want the state to do something about it. And these are the same people that complained when we had coyotes in the woods killing the deer.

Guess you just can not please some people no matter what you do.

Howdy Allan!

Here in Louisville, and across the Mighty Ohio River, in Southern Indiana, there is a housing boom going on, the likes of which I never would have believed. Deere and wild turkey (the bird, not the liquor) are multiplying like bunnies. They are actually "safer" in and around all these homes, than they were in the wide open spaces. No one can hunt in close to homes. Deer seem to sense that, and "hang out" near subdivisions.

About 25 years ago, wild turkey were all but extinct around here. The Indiana Dept. of Natural Resourses started releasing them into ceratin areas, to attemt to revitalize the population. It worked TOO well. Now there is literally THOUSANDS of them in every woods around here. SO...The DNR decides that there are too many of them. The turkey's only natural preditor? Rattlesnakes! They raid nest's, and eat the turkey eggs. The DNR WAS going to start releasing rattlesnakes INTO POPULATED AREA'S. At least untill "the plan" leaked out.

TYPICAL governmental logic....John

Now how many a Texas redneck hunter wouldn't give his left eyebrow for "being undated" with wild turkeys.

I really admire the bird. Very witty and beautiful..... but that face..... YUK!

Glad you added the "leaked out" comment. Otherwise would have bothered me all day thinking about the danger in their "political" decision.

I don't understand the concept of "hunting" turkey. Its kind of like hunting chickens isn't it? More then once I've come to a tire squealing stop only to have to blow the horn to get them to move out of the road. My wife took out the grill on her Taurus when she smacked one at 55 MPH, over $1000 damage, almost as bad as hitting a deer.

My son (5 years old) has been caught a couple times trying to sneak his BB gun down to the fenced poop pond to try and shoot at the flock of turkeys (20 or so) that land there everyday to drink and then for some reason can't fiqure out that they have to fly over the fence to get out. They usually spend about three hours walking the fence before they finally take to wing and fly out.

Well I did once hear about a hawk flying over an Arkansas turkey farm. Something about the hawk. The turkeys dogpiled on top of eachother in the middle of the yard and killed the ones on the bottom from suffocation.

The wild ones here are scarce and smart

MR,

Yep, they are a trip, especially that first one; shakes ya up a little. Seems like you never see the deer you hit.

Out here, over in Wyoming, I-80 has 15-17 foot 'deer fences' running it's length in heavy animal areas to keep the deer and antelope off the road-way.

Then, there are always the landowners who won't keep their fences up; ever plow into a herd of Black Angus cattle in the middle of the night? That’ll make ya late for the dance! :>)

And the worst part about hitting a cow or such is after the accident the police will look for the owner.
They will search high and low and will be lucky to find one person within 100 miles that has even seen a cow before never alone know anybody that may own the one you hit.

That's for sure, 'cause the owner is responsible.

A month ago there was a semi and three cars totalled here by some Angus in the road. That adds up to a bunch of money for that ol' farmer.

Sure makes that barbed wire look a whole lot cheaper than it did the day before! :>)

Not necessarily; suppose it depends on location/jurisdiction. Locally, law hasn't kept up with the change from agraria (not in dictionary, but I like the sound) to suburbia; if you run over someone's livestock, you're responsible, unless you can prove he habitually lets his stock run out. However, most livestock which is run over is not claimed and the owner can not be found..... i.e., "I know I've got the only Polled Herefords for 3 miles around, but that's sure not one of mine"..... ....etc.

A couple of miles down the road from us last week there was one deer lying beside the road that had been hit. Now, there are 3 lying within a hundred feet of each other.
My Wife hit one on this same stretch of highway a couple of years ago. She called from work to tell me that it was just the turn signal that had been damaged. Great I thought, so I picked up a new lamp assembly. The only problem was it cost $2200 to fix up the Tahoe in order to put that turn signal back in!

Yes, you are right. Those deer are the most inconsiderate animals on the planets. Can you imagine how selfish they are? They actually have the nerve to cross our paved highways to get to the other side. And to make matters worse, they even get in the way of our cars and pickup trucks when we are probably speeding. I agree, they sure aren't like they used to be years ago before cars came on the scene. Some animals just don't get it, especially those darned deer. Sometimes I think they might even be a bit stupid.

In this area of Florida we have smallish deer, but the big damage causers are black bears. About a mile from me a guy hit a 400-pounder and totaled his pickup.

A friend out in Colorado hit a moose and the body went into his windshield -- fatal for the moose and nearly fatal for the friend.

yeah, I love to hear from the animal rights do-gooders, "Oh dont shoot the deer what did they ever do to you" Usually after a do-gooder hits a deer then their attitude changes. As far as I care they should be all shot, deer that is. Here in Mich. I think we lead the country in Deer vs. car accidents.

My county (Montcalm) in Michigan is 4th for car deer accidents in the state. Not uncommon to see several deer carcasses per mile piled up. My family has had several near misses right in our own driveway over the last few nights. Thursday nite I chased three out of my yard twice with the car - (at different times.) This morning there were two running across the field within feet of the pasture fence where my sheep & llamas are. I don't need the deer's diseases in the sheep herd.
Every one of my family members has had a car deer except my son, within the last couple years. wife has hit two - there's still hair stuck under her car from the last one. Deer (and turkeys) are at nuisance levels, and need to be thinned.
