The Buna-N seals also get very hard at about 327�F and do not recover when the temperature drops back to normal. The resins in the friction material also change state but I'm don't recall the temp. at which this occurs. Also whenever there is a transmission failure which produces metalic trash some of the trash ends up being stuck in the cooler. This metalic debris works it way loose and will eventually destry a rebuilt tranny. The best thing to do is to replace all coolers and blow out the lines when doing a trans repair.
