Well...here we go...you're really right about friends, and in that regard my origins in Western North Carolina rate high. Lived here in Mi nearly thirty years, went back to NC, stayed seven years. The climate in the mountains there is really hard to beat. Cool in summer, hardly ever over 85, moderate in winter, always days when you can work outside in a heavy shirt; spring comes in late February; BUT, every damned body in the Northeastern US has got it figured out, and quite a few from Florida...land prices out of sight, hardly any vacant land, no nice old farms like the one I bought here in SE Mi when I came back two years ago. Tennessee is great, also central and western Kentucky, but way too HOT! In laws from Chattanooga, Tennessee valley is great, but the heat in summer is fierce, not to mention the humidity. Tennessee is only two hours from Atlanta, the hottest civilized place in the eastern US...Florida doesn't count. For me, the heat is a deal breaker. I really think lake country in MIchigan, wherever there are hills and ater, will be the next great retirement frontier....maybe I can even get some of my money back outta this place :)...now if we could just thin out these Yankees..... Regards...
