I was just wondering what is the best state to retire in because ILL. is about the worst or at least LaSalle county is anyway. I have several years to before I retire but it doesn't hurt to check things out.

I've got friends that live in Marsielles, Ottawa, and Seneca, they home school their children.

As far as what state is best to retire in, I'd say would be the state of a sound mind and happiness, but better do it before Blago auctions it off for something. LOL.

I don't live there anymore, just work there.

Well Shaggy, This is how it is for me,years ago when I thought about retirement,I couldent wait to move somewhere warmer, better duck hunting,fishing,but when I got older that feeling went away, what mattered more was family and friends.I still pine for somewhere good to hunt ducks, but when I'm too old to hunt I'll still have family and friends around and the older i get the more it matters. I guess this old apple will never roll far from the tree. jimmy

Well...here we go...you're really right about friends, and in that regard my origins in Western North Carolina rate high. Lived here in Mi nearly thirty years, went back to NC, stayed seven years. The climate in the mountains there is really hard to beat. Cool in summer, hardly ever over 85, moderate in winter, always days when you can work outside in a heavy shirt; spring comes in late February; BUT, every damned body in the Northeastern US has got it figured out, and quite a few from Florida...land prices out of sight, hardly any vacant land, no nice old farms like the one I bought here in SE Mi when I came back two years ago. Tennessee is great, also central and western Kentucky, but way too HOT! In laws from Chattanooga, Tennessee valley is great, but the heat in summer is fierce, not to mention the humidity. Tennessee is only two hours from Atlanta, the hottest civilized place in the eastern US...Florida doesn't count. For me, the heat is a deal breaker. I really think lake country in MIchigan, wherever there are hills and ater, will be the next great retirement frontier....maybe I can even get some of my money back outta this place :)...now if we could just thin out these Yankees.....

Regards...

As someone who was born, worked and retired in Florida, I wouldn't really recommend this state. I have acclimated to the hot muggy summers by birth, but not the horde of snowbirds that visit us every year. My choice would be either northern Alabama, northern Mississippi or western Tennessee. Cheap land, low cost of living, friendly natives.

As for summer's heat -- that is why they invented Air Conditioning. I'll take heat any day over being a$$ deep in snow for five months of the year!

Move across the river to Iowa! DON'T move into someplace like Des Moines, or Iowa City or Davenport either. There are lots and lots of smaller towns which have quantities of low priced homes, coupled with a LOW cost of living.

Depends on if you want lake front or out in the booneys. Lake front can go for more then $100 per lake foot. Country land goes from arond $500 per ache to up to around $1500 per depending on where it is etc. I picked up 11 acher a year or so ago for around $850 per. I know that I dodn't spell acher right noever have been able to LOL

Sounds like land is reasonable down there too. Lanf in Michigan is hard to find for less than $1200/ acre in the lower penninsula and thts swampland. I paid $14,000 for my 10 acres 12 yrs ago. Today it would be $30,000 Lake front. is really high. $4000 - $7000 a front ft. Might have to make a trip down to your area sometime.

Here's a few of the BEST states to retire in:

1. Wealthy;
2. Healthy;
3. Young;
4. Sane, or reasonably close;
5. Still Handsome (men)/Still Pretty (women).

Some of the WORST states to retire in:

1. Broke;
2. Sick;
3. Terribly Old;
4. Feeble (physically OR mentally);
5. Ugly As Homemade Sin (for SOME of us, it can't be helped).

Hope you find this list as helpful as I did...NOW I'm smilin'!

My thought on this is the best place to retire is where your friends are. Doesn"t make any difference where you are if you have friends. If it"s cold and nasty outside you stay inside and snuggle up to the fireplace.

I am retiring and am going nowhere and doing nothing different than currently (other than work at a paying job). N. Central Texas is a nice place, nice folks, good medical and nice weather....if you don"t mind it bouncing around all the time. We"re far enough south and close enough to the Gulf of Mexico that weather patterns come through and don"t usually last but a couple of days. Wind is southerly previaling and usually always have a breeze in the summer.

Expenses, housing, taxes, and all are quite reasonable. Lots of recreation.

No, TX is NOT the best state to retire in! It's hot & humid. (Been in the 90's with heat indices around 95-100 for a good part of October!) Scenery's boring as h^&%. Too flat most places. People not all that friendly and, besides, they talk funny. You won't like the food. (Nothing but BBQ and chicken fried steak.) Cities are real crowded. Rural areas are cliquish .. You'll still be "those new people" after 20 years. They all think their football teams are better than wherever you came from. (They aren't, of course, but you won't convince 'em.) Almost no snow, and that'll drive you crazy if you're from up north. (Admit it .. you like snow!) Almost no seasons. It's more like a blur of hot weather to warm weather to tolerable weather (very short) back to warm then hot. Trees don't change color much, and that'll bug you, too. And all the cowboy, Alamo and Tx heritage stuff .. don't get me started!

Florida's got more beaches. AZ has nice dry climate plus pretty mountains if you want 'em. Same with NM. Colorado has even more nice hills & pretty trees. And there are probably one or two other nice states I'm forgetting that would be good places to retire.

Well, hope this helps.

Ha Ha Ha. You found it! (My reply).

Yeah, my biggest rub right now is traffic. I like the conveniences that growth brings on, but the traffic yucko.

Even the small town at the edge of the metroplex (DFW) where I work is inumdated with cars.

Wally World had one of those brown stores here for a lotta years. Then a few years ago they built a blue one behind it and dozed it down. Today they are behind the second one, across the street and have captured a whole city block for another one of their super stores. Unbelieveable.

Take care buddy,

Mark

How did I get drug into this TOM....lol

Az is NOT the place to call retirement home. Az is the place you want to over winter then leave, Nov to April.

Our sales tax is 8.5% average, we have income tax and property tax is raising at 13%yr average. License plates are high. Insurrance high.

Fuel is $2.15gal with another hole in the pipeline supply Wensday. Amazing, they seam too shut down that pipeline for the last three years about this time for "repairs"

On the RV forums everyone says S. Dakota is the place to call home. No income tax, plates are resonable, not sticky on addresses for residence, insurance reasonable. Land reasonable!

Can't fool me though. If you head up to about 8,000 ft elevation for the Arizona summer, it's great. Didn't know it cost so much to stay there.

All I was really trying to do was direct everybody somewhere other than here. And Arizona sure has been a popular destination. Ever been to Sun City? I understand even Prescott is really crowded now. Eloy has to still be cheap, but I know a guy who designed a concrete dome built there. So I guess it's changing.

No you have it wrong...it's a mountain top in VA...private acerage...lots of trees...running water...wait P break

Eloy cheap? 10% sales tax, I have no idea about property tax but it's got to be up there on the high end.

Hi T_Bone,

Got you so excited you hadda go? Puppies I knew about but...

Eloy isn't a slum anymore? I've gotta take a road trip. Way behind the times. More than a few years ago there was a book about the half dozen or so toughest towns in the US. Eloy was included after they shot 3 sheriffs in one year. Had trouble finding replacements.

Central Va sure ain't cheap. Razed a 5000' pole barn at a New Jerseyite's weekend home here. He didn't like the appearance. Then he decided he didn't have quite enough land with 24 acres. 2 additional acres on the hill behind his house cost him $200k. Not my neighborhood, across the county.

When I worked for Production Credit in the 70's, our credit life insurance field guy had about the whole western US as his territory, and operated out of his car- so could live in any state he wanted. He looked at tax structure, cost of living, etc. and chose South Dakota. Was there for one winter- said you couldn't tell if it was actually snowing or not, because it blew around all the time regardless. Had a rope to the barn, and you could see for miles from the hayloft- when you got above the blowing snow. After one year, he pulled up stakes and moved to Boise. He was a great guy- we didn't care much one way or the other about the insurance, but he always took everybody out to dinner when he was in town.

South Dakota may be OK to call home, but you may not want to endure our winters every year. A large number of RVer's do claim residence here, but travel South for the winter months. Real estate taxes and sales tax are our main source of goverment income. RE taxes per year amount to about 1.5% of appraised value. Sales tax is 4% (plus some cities @ 1% to 2%). Vehicle license is realtive to vehicle weight (my 6600# Chevy is about $70.00 per year). Insurance (full coverage) is about $650.00 per year on the above vehicle. The sticker in the state is wages...low...so bring your own money!

An Engineer I used to work with years ago said his parents moved to Tennessee. He is originally from Mich. (like me) and his reasons were the following, 1. Tn. is only a 9 hour drive from the the family is Mi. 2. Tn winters arent as bad as Mi. 3. nice scenery, land is relatively inexpensive when compared to Mi. and midwest. 4. No water shortages like in Az. and the west, which also means no wildfires like in the western part of the country.

Gosh, Redneck, I came back to Michigan to retire. Danged compass wasnt working. Thought I was traveling south, but was going north. My thought is that once retired I can live anywhere, and when the real cold weather hits head for warmer surroundings till it thaws. This year, however, I may still be harvesting soy beans during that same cold weather. I suppose each person has his or her own definition of the perfect place to retire. That place may be totally different from the other persons place. Heck, My missus and I havent even sorted that one out yet.

Jerry, One thing that figures into the mix is that the Missus is 18 yrs younger than I am. That fact alone tempers any decision we make concerning retirement, since she is still working. You"re right about your last statement. There"s something to be said for being close to family, church, and friends, retired or not. My family is scattered, but hers is so close you cant pry them apart with a crow-bar. I"m not sure she would be content if we were to totally uproot and retire to a warmer climate. Thats why we find a way to escape the harsh weather and still maintain our roots here. Besides, I was gone from my roots for 47 yrs, and it took me too long to get back to uproot again. I"m afraid I"m here in the land of Dow dioxin, wet springs, dry summers, and unpredictable falls for the duration

I love the Michigan summers but after 70 Michigan winters we pack up the trailer and head south for at least a month. After two weeks my six daughters start call the wife wondering when we are coming home. It hell from their on trying to keep in the land of sunshine for several more weeks. I enjoy tractor pulling and Florida seems to have the most of them in Jan. and Feb.
