8=172 engine
4=4 speed trans
5=5 speed trans with single clutch (non-live pto)
6=5 speed trans with double clutch (live pto)
7=Select-o-speed with single speed independent pto
8=select-o-speed with dual speed independent pto
1=801 series as opposed to the earlier 800 series (a couple of years newer...not much else different).
