hi i am looking at a ford 851 and i am wondering if there were any problems with these tractors. i was also wondering if it has a selecto-speed-transmission, and if they have a two stage clutch. the guy is selling it for 1500 but he says it needs rings. i was wondering if it is worth buying it. if anyone knows a site where i can get parts to rebuild the engine please tell me. I was also wondering if it would be a good tractor for mowing thank you. PS DOES it have power steeering?? thank you

You are testing my memory, but I believe the initial "8" means it is the bigger engine utility tractor. Now it gets more fuzzy. In the intermediate position a "4" was for the 4 speed and "6" was for the 5 speed, and "8" was the 10 speed jerk-a-matic. Now the plot thickens, when I began this, I thought the 1 was for live PTO. Now I am not so sure. We had an 861, 961 and 640. The 961 was diesel, row crop, 5 spd, with live PTO. The 861 was utility, large engine gas, 5 spd, with live PTO. The 640 was 4 spd small gas engine, utility with non-live PTO. We had a 960 for a short time when the 961 was being worked on and I believe it was a a big engine gas row crop with non-live PTO. However after saying all of this, I believe the "5" with a following 1 must be for 4 spd live PTO model or alternatively a 5 spd non-live PTO. When all is done I guess I am not that much help. Probably has power steering I don't believe you can tell from the model number. If it doesn't have live PTO, I would pass. I much preferred the 5 sp over the 4 spd and would avoid the selecto-spd, unless you just want to have something different rather than useful. Engine rebuild parts are readily available, many suppliers.

8=172 engine
4=4 speed trans
5=5 speed trans with single clutch (non-live pto)
6=5 speed trans with double clutch (live pto)
7=Select-o-speed with single speed independent pto
8=select-o-speed with dual speed independent pto
1=801 series as opposed to the earlier 800 series (a couple of years newer...not much else different).

Thanks for the info. I guess my memory wasn't too good on the 960. Regardless, although the Fords were in the distant past (except for the 640 which we still have), they were still good tractors and I remember them fondly.

Ford 851 will have a 5 speed transmission with a single clutch. Power steering was optional. Just look at it. If it has a power steering pump and hydraulic lines plumbed to the drag links then it has power steering.

The 851 came in either gas or diesel. You can do further research by clicking the link below.

I assume it still runs even if it needs rings. If so, $1500 is probably a good price. I know a guy that used to buy these for that price just to part out and he would make money doing it. Look at overall condition and if it runs test everything (trans, hydraulics, lights, etc). Drive it in every gear and make sure it doesn't jump out of gear. Drive it down a hill if possible (even a gentle slope). Doing that at half throttle will cause a problem tranny to jump out of gear and would indicate some money to be spent there. There are lots of places to buy parts. There are even engine kits and rings, etc available on this site. At the very top right corner of this page there is a section of links called "Market Place". Click on "tractor parts" to see what's available. There are other sources as well.
