Doug for what it is worth, based on my experience, stay with the backhoe and follow Kevin's advice. You do not have to bang and beat on it. I have seen stumps that had to be dug out because a short stump does not give you much leverage for pushing. If a dozer is handy dig down on one side and let the dozer push in that direction. But I believe Kevins advice will get it out for you.
