cdm: You seem to be getting a lot of advice on tight chains. There are really only two good reasons for tight wheel chains; one is speed and by speed I mean speeds of 10 to 40 mph, the second is ice chains with corks made right into cross chain link. Even tightness will not stop those from turning and chewing your tires to bits. Been there and done that, had a set of those on a John Deere 540A skidder 30 years ago. Kept them tight by putting a cable through hole in wheel and hooking to both side chains. Still chewed the tires.

The Canadian ring chain is still the best on traction and works best when no tighter than you can get it with your fastener at bottom of wheel. Those and regular cross chains will give better service and clean better if loose enough so they counter rotate on wheel as tractor travels. Tighteners on wheel chains actually reduce the effectiveness of the chain from a traction stand point. Want drive down the road in high gear, take the chains off.
