TIRES CHAINS ON ALL 4 WHEELS OF 4WD JD TRACTOR?

I have JD 5410 4wd tractor with chains on the rear. I still have slippage on ice when going up or down steep, winding drive. Is their unnecessary risk of damage to drivetrain by putting chains on front wheels as well as rears? Manual makes no mention of chains, and JD dealer not offering opinion. Chains I have are the Canadian spike type.
Thanks too all.

cdm: You seem to be getting a lot of advice on tight chains. There are really only two good reasons for tight wheel chains; one is speed and by speed I mean speeds of 10 to 40 mph, the second is ice chains with corks made right into cross chain link. Even tightness will not stop those from turning and chewing your tires to bits. Been there and done that, had a set of those on a John Deere 540A skidder 30 years ago. Kept them tight by putting a cable through hole in wheel and hooking to both side chains. Still chewed the tires.

The Canadian ring chain is still the best on traction and works best when no tighter than you can get it with your fastener at bottom of wheel. Those and regular cross chains will give better service and clean better if loose enough so they counter rotate on wheel as tractor travels. Tighteners on wheel chains actually reduce the effectiveness of the chain from a traction stand point. Want drive down the road in high gear, take the chains off.

..... .I run chains [ladder type] on my rear tires only and have trouble getting them tight.....they weigh 90 lbs. a wheel and wrestling them on snug is a struggle.....I"ve heard there"s a chain tightening tool that solves the problem..... anybody know anything about such an item?..... comments/opinions most welcome..... thank you.

Bo,
Years ago I worked in the woods and we used a homemade tool to tighten skidder chains. It was a tire jack from a VolksWagon. They would replace the base with a hook and turn the top around witch already had a hook. Hook each hook in a chain link and jacking would bring them together. Saw one today at the local JD dealer. I think they are made at the dealership on the VW jack design.
Also, some crews were cutting a hole in the rim and running a chain from the inside side chain to the outside side chain.. The chain stayed fairly loose untill the wheel tried to spin inside the chain. Then the chain through the rim would cause the tire chain to tighten up like a fiddle string. Once the need was gone the chain loosened up again. Warning, I saw one guy torch a hole in his rim for this and two days later he had a flat. Tube was completly burt away with hardly a trace left! Dan.

We use several rubber tarp straps to tighten ours and they work fine. This is a 18.4-34 tire so these are big and heavy.

I've run regular cross chains on the front of my Ford 3930 for several years. I know the Double Diamond chains are also available, but pricey. I like a standard cross chain, as I can still go on the road with them. Not so nice with the ring or DD. Just make sure the front's are TIGHT. On the small wheels, they have a tendancy to drift off. Don't know about warranty. However, I doubt that using chains will cause you any mechanical grief, provided you use common sense and don't abuse the tractor. Good luck.

Rod

PS They do add a lot of traction.

cdm: If you have or plan to use Canadian ring chains even for just the rear wheels, I would presure John Deere dealer for a bit more of a commitment on any warrenties. That 5410 is an offshore built tractor. I don't know about JD but 30 years ago when IH introduced the 64, 74 and 84 series basically from Europe they did void warrenties when using the ring chains. I'm not saying all as I believe some owners and dealers were quick to get rid if the chains before any service rep had a look.

I was never personally involved with one of these, but from conversations I've heard I believe the problem stems with tractors with mechanical gear diff lock.

On hard, glare ice you will still get some slippage, it"s normal. I really don"t think you will do any damage to your tractor as long as you excersise a little common sense, in other words, go reasonably slow, and don"t let the tires just sit and spin if it is bouncing the tractor. I have not seen an owners manual in several years that said anything about using tire chains, whether it was for a car, truck, or tractor.

The loggers here use something called a "ring chain". Unstoppable on ice. No reason you can't run them front and rear assuming they are available in both sizes.

See http://www.baileys-online.com/store/USA.htm and then look for "MECHANICAL HARVESTER PRODUCTS: skidder chain". It comes in many standard tractor tire sizes.

Warning - It ain't cheap.

What you can do is take some metal screws they used for pole barns and screw then in the lugs. They will wear off before they become a flat hazard and will increase your traction on ice. I have the same problem when plowing my driveway. Sometimes you just can"t put enough pressure on the one brake to keep from pushing you off the road

Many 4wd tractors working in the woods here (Canada) during the winter have chains on all four. I've seen a big NH and a Kubota M9000 with this done. They use the stud type chains, or ring chains.
