Bo, Years ago I worked in the woods and we used a homemade tool to tighten skidder chains. It was a tire jack from a VolksWagon. They would replace the base with a hook and turn the top around witch already had a hook. Hook each hook in a chain link and jacking would bring them together. Saw one today at the local JD dealer. I think they are made at the dealership on the VW jack design. Also, some crews were cutting a hole in the rim and running a chain from the inside side chain to the outside side chain.. The chain stayed fairly loose untill the wheel tried to spin inside the chain. Then the chain through the rim would cause the tire chain to tighten up like a fiddle string. Once the need was gone the chain loosened up again. Warning, I saw one guy torch a hole in his rim for this and two days later he had a flat. Tube was completly burt away with hardly a trace left! Dan.
