I've been in and out of cattle feeding. As a rule of thumb you are looking at coalves that will make you the most money marketing your feed on hand. I like 5 weights that are less than 7 months old without any feed suppliment right off the cow. Some folks specialize in feeding the light weight calves. Given only the facts at hand, it seems that the heavier calf was docked pretty severely for some reason rather than the smaller calf bringing a premium. Too fat, too old, or wrong color could all be reasons had I been bidding. I'm strictly on the cow-calf end right now (but subject to start feeding anytime). My 6 weight steers, off the cow have been bringing $640-690. Light weights (400, only selling them b/c they are coming off heifers and I want them to have a little more bounce back time) bringing $520-550.
