Next time it happens, remove the gas cap. If that fixes it then the vent is plugged.

If not, then replace the coil. Be sure you use the right coil or you will burn the points.

Oh yea, get the temperature gauge fixed pronto or you will asking how to rebuild an engine next. 9 times out of 10 it's the sending unit. If not, you can buy a new mechanical gauge/sender for cheap at NAPA etc.

To check the t-stat, boil it on the stove covered in water and have a meat thermometer in the pan. It should be fully open by the time it reaches the spec'd temperature.
