If 6v and still has the original type generator, it would just need to be repolerized to whatever you want - n or p ground. I personally much much prefer one keeps it the way it came from the factory, so everyone knows how it should be.

If it was converted to 12v, then to be honest it could be any which way at all, very hard to speculate, tho most all 12v conversions become n ground with a $15 alternator. But other things are possible, so you need to explain what exactly you have for the entire electrical system.

What exactly do you mean by 'it would not power up' after starting. It runs, but only at idle? It has no power to pull anything? Or?
