9N Year/Serial No. Question

Yesterday at an auction a very clean 9N with a combination clutch/brake lever on the left was sold. My used tractor price guide/serial number list says serial no. on left of block. There, on a raised boss about 3/4 by three inches, high and l/3 from the block rear was the number "6" stamped in the block? Could this really be the serial number? The steering column plate was painted over and illegible....
