Count the caps on the battery. If it has 3 it's a 6v battery and you apparently need a 12v battery. If it has 6 caps it's a 12v battery and if it measures 6.2v with the ignition off the battery is totally stone cold dead. It's very common to destroy a good battery while playing with generator/regulator problem. If you did not correctly polarize the generator, that welded the regulator points and fried the battery.
