Generators must always be polarized, alternators are never polarized. As far as the wiring goes, many replacement regulators are wired different internally than the original. What this means is you get out your DMM and figure out what you need. In some cases, the factoy wiring harness has to be modified to use the new regulator. The "shop" that sold you the replacement should be able to tell you what to look for.
