Will a 4 terminal reg. charge with nothing connected to the L terminal? And I was told it didn't need polarizing when mounting the new reg., would it be bad after trying it without that terminal hooked up? This is on my 300 Utility. It had a 3 terminal reg. on it that checked bad, the shop said it should have the 4 wire. There are 2 wires on one of the terminals, one goes to the "L"? Loren

The L/light/load terminal had loads other than battery charging attached on some generator systems. It allowed the regulator to compensate for voltage drop in the light/load system by boosting voltage a wee bit and yet not boil the battery over.

Yes,polorize before starting the engine. Any time you disturbe the generator/regulator or its wiring you should polorize. It was standard practice when replacing a 4 terminal regulator with a three, that the L and BAT wire were both put on the BAT regulator terminal, seemed to work fine. of the 2 heavy wires that come from the tractor harness, the wire for the BAT terminal should have full battery voltage, the L wire should not.

Generators must always be polarized, alternators are never polarized.

As far as the wiring goes, many replacement regulators are wired different internally than the original. What this means is you get out your DMM and figure out what you need. In some cases, the factoy wiring harness has to be modified to use the new regulator. The "shop" that sold you the replacement should be able to tell you what to look for.
