I've hand driven (not dug) 2-1/4" shallow wells up to 30' using the same compression coupling to take the beating of a 100 lb. steel weight I lift and drop on each 5' section of pipe I add, well after my arms should've dropped off. Good workout. I'm not a well expert, but when you start getting beyond 50' deep, I'm not sure that shallow pumps care for that much work, but I think after 75' a 2 stage deepwell is a must (maybe even 50'). You can rent a motorized driver that will set on top of your pipe (the easy way) and drive it, but the deeper you drive, the more likely the pipe will curve off to anywhere but straight down, and the smaller the pipe, the less rigid and the quicker it gets out of shape (curves off). The wellhead on a shallow is pointed so you can drive it (not through rocks or boulders), as opposed to a deep wellhead which is the blunt pickup and lowered down (not driven) after coring by equipment which most farmers don't have. I now have a 4" deepwell that goes down about 100', but the owner before me had it cored/drilled and sleaved so I didn't have to. What is the water table around you? What are you looking to do - fill the bathtub or irrigate crops? An electric motor, an old tractor's PTO?
