The first (and hopefully an easy fix) is the head gasket. However, you don't say how you came by this machine. If it was in a dispersal sale, I would suspect that the previous owner(s) had removed the sealing washer to lessen any water leaking back into the engine after stopping, and perhaps already knew there was a more serious problem. They might know what caused it.
Look at the head gasket and assess whether it was changed recently.
I think you may have been 'caught', or you tripped up on this one.
Until you (or your supplier) tear into it, you will not know for sure what the problem is.
