Non glow plug engines need to crank fast enough, have enough compression ratio, tight combustion chamber sealing and good fuel atomization. To creat enough heat to ignite fuel oil.
A glow plug engine as long as the glow plugs are hot, some fuel gets slobbered on the the plugs and the engine turns. They will start.
