Gear oil specs call out for a GL-1 through GL-5. If your unit is very old, it's possible that the specs did not exist at that time. You might want to seek help from Bolens. People often think to use the highest grade sold, GL-5. It's certainly the best but can damage older units where GL-1 was intended. If it were mine, I'd use GL-4 just to be safe.
