Bolens Gear Oil Question

We are changing the hydralic/gear oil on our Bolens G272 tractor. The manual calls for SAE 80W gear oil. The only kind of gear oil we've been able to find is 80W-90 and one called Universal which says it works in all tractors. Would the 80W-90 or the Universal be all right to use? What does the 90 stand for in the 80W-90?

75W-90 and 80W-90 can be safely substituted for 80W and 90W oil. Just be sure you get the GL right. GL4 and GL5 are easy to get but cannot always be used in place of a lower GL oil. Check the specs in the manual.

I don't see anywhere in the maintenance booklet where it mentions GL. What is GL?

Gear oil specs call out for a GL-1 through GL-5. If your unit is very old, it's possible that the specs did not exist at that time. You might want to seek help from Bolens. People often think to use the highest grade sold, GL-5. It's certainly the best but can damage older units where GL-1 was intended. If it were mine, I'd use GL-4 just to be safe.

When Bolens was bought out by Troy-Bilt in the late 80's they quit importing the diesels. If your local Bolens (now owned by MTD, who bought out the assets of bankrupt Troy-Bilt) dealer wasn't around then he may not have a clue (oops, I mean service manual). AGCO/White still imports the Iseki machines as their compacts. The G272 was the same tractor as the White FB27. The dealer I worked for sold both, so we could sell a customer an Iseki with a white paint job, or a silver one. As I recall they used a "universal" fluid, like IH Hy-tran, or JD Hy-guard, but check with a dealer.

Hi

I saw your post re the 272 gear oil where you said
the 272 was same as White FB27. I have a G274 and need parts, filters etc for it. 2 questions for you

1. Were the 272 & 274 similar enough to swap most parts ??

2 did White have a model # for the 274, or could I use White FB27 parts on my 274

Thanks in advance,

Rick T

Thanks to both Ron and Ian for the information. Our Bolens G272 is around 18-19 years old.
