I replaced the light socket in mine with a 1 wire pigtail assembly from my local auto parts store.

The light assembly attaches to the dash panel with a bunch of prongs along the base of the assembly. To remove it, first unplug the wire if it's still attached, then just pull it out of the dash from the top. It could be stuck pretty good and may take a little gentle side to side, up and down persuation. Or you could attack it from the underside with a flat blade screwdriver and gently push the prongs inward to loosen them up. If it looks rusty down there you might want to hit it with some PB Blaster and let it soak awhile.

I got my dash light from a junkyard and some of the prongs were so rusty they just snapped off when I touched them. But there are enough good prongs to hold it securely in place.

Once you get it out, the socket assembly is held inside the housing with more prongs. You just have to pull it out. It should snap back in place after you replace the bulb and socket.

On mine I got cute and sprayed white paint on the inside thinking that it would increase the light output. I guess it worked, but I had to then scrape the paint off the area where the socket assembly snaps into place in the outer housing because I didn't have a good grounding connection after painting the inside. Same with the rusty prongs on the outer housing....I had to clean them up so there would be a decent ground for the light to work properly.

If the light is completely junk, I think Don Barkley and Dennis Carpenter are now offering brand new repop units (complete assembly) for about $25.00 (less than I paid for a rusty junkyard original).
