I agree with the recommendation for electric brakes. That's what I have. Recently rented a mini excavator with surge brakes on their trailer. Going down a hill in the rain, put on the brakes and just started sliding. Since the surge brakes only work when the pulling truck pushes back, I basically had no brakes and barely made it out of that situation. Electric brakes will let you adjust the amount of braking force irrespective of your pulling truck's brakes.
