No filter. One of the main weaknesses of the old Fords. Makes it doubly important to change fluid on a regular basis (I do mine about every other year). As for cleaning...hmmm....I've never had to do it, but I've read on the Ford board of people using kerosene in the lift system to flush out the sludge. You might want spend some time in the archives of the Ford board and/or tap the expertise of the guys there.
