Presuming it's a gas engine. Has it been tuned up properly?
Could be timing, carburation, incorrect plug grade or something more serious causing the problem. Sounds like it may be in need of a top end overhaul - decarbonisation at minimum, may need new rings or even more.
Could the knock be detonation (red hot carbon in the engine)?
Start on the easy checks - does it burn oil, timing, colour of plug insulator, view thru plug hole etc.If you have just bought it I would suspect that it's previous history has not been fully disclosed and may not be too good reading....
